Weatherproofing Garage Door Seals

No-one wants to spend their weekend cleaning out water, dust and leaves from their garage. This is often the case when an existing weather seal breaks down.
This can be resolved with the installation of a weatherproof garage door seal. Below we've listed the different types of weather proofing to add to your door to help prevent this problem.

Garage Door Threshold Seals

These are a great solution for solving water ingress, especially when the driveway slopes the wrong way and a high barrier is needed. The threshold seal is attached to the concrete using a high-strength adhesive and forms a solid barrier to water, dust, and vermin. Being made from vinyl, these threshold seals are highly durable and do not rot, degrade, or discolour, making them ideal for the UK’s variable weather. They are also an aesthetically pleasing solution for doors with large gaps underneath.

Garage Door Side Seals

The gap between the door and the side frame can be a point of entry for draughts, dust, and some rainwater. For those wishing to turn their garage into an all-year-round usable space, it is important to seal this. The side seal usually consists of a roll of vinyl which can be cut to size and secured in place with self-tapping galvanized screws. The vinyl covers the gap and touches tight to the door, ensuring draughts are no longer a problem. These can be installed on both old and new doors and can make the outside of the garage more aesthetically pleasing.

Commercial Door Seals

These are usually used on commercial and industrial premises, but occasionally are needed when the garage is used to house heavy vehicles or equipment. These are made from extruded aluminium, with compressible vinyl underseals. These ensure no water can enter, and the aluminium casing protects the weather seals and guarantees a long lifespan.

Garage Door Gasket Bottom Seal

These gasket seals usually consist of a piece of rubber which slides into 2 channels on the bottom of the door, creating an upside-down U-shaped seal which compresses on the ground when the door closes. These gasket seals are usually easy to install and cheap, but unfortunately break down after a couple of years due to it being made from rubber. Also, being a compression seal, they are good at stopping leaves and dust, but unfortunately water can still seep under, so not ideal for those where water ingress is the main issue.

Garage Door Top Seal

The gap above the door is an entry point for draughts and can result in heat being lost from the garage. Whilst you can install a rubber flap to hang down from the inside, these can often interfere with the opening mechanism, and they do nothing to improve the image of the garage. A garage door top seal is easy to install, using galvanised self-tapping screws to secure it to the lintel. Due to the unique design, these seals prevent draughts, leaves and dust, whilst also improving the curb appeal of your garage.

Garage Door Wraparound Seal

This weather seal is designed for roller garage doors which have a 75mm T-bar at the bottom. With their unique design, installation is easy as it requires no screws or adhesive. When the door is closed, the vinyl seal compresses down and prevents entry of leaves, dust, and vermin. These weather seals are ideal for situations where a floor threshold seal is not advisable, such as shop entrance ways. The only drawback is that these seals are not able to prevent water ingress if there is standing water.

If you follow some of the options mentioned above, you should be able to weatherproof your garage, and ensure your belongings are safe from the elements. If unsure about what weatherproofing seals would be best for your garage, please contact us and we will be happy to help.
