How to Protect your Home Against Storms and Floods

With flooding around the world sadly hitting the headlines more and more regularly of late, we wanted to share our advice on how to protect your home against storms and extreme weather conditions.

Of course, when storms and flooding are on a large scale and in countries prone to natural disaster, domestic preventative measures can’t guarantee to protect a property.

However, if you’re fortunate enough to live in an area where storms and flooding just typically mean inconvenience and minor water damage, we know just what you need.

Good quality garage door seals

If rainwater does manage to make its way into your garage during heavy downpours and storms, it can damage the contents of your property and cause your electricals to become hazardous. This can happen when a garage doesn’t fully compress with the floor due to the floor not being level or the gasket strip on the bottom of the door becoming worn.

Fitting a robust door threshold seal will help sweep rainwater and debris out of your garage and prevent water from flooding into your property. It will also help stop heat escaping from your home when temperates drop so that you can stay warm, cosy and dry inside.

Some other top tips for storm-proofing your home:

• If a flood comes, move electrical equipment upstairs and away from windows.

• Prune unruly plants and trees to avoid them blowing around (or down) and damaging your property.
• Regularly check the state of your roof and tend to any issues or damage quickly.
• Ensure all doors, gates and windows are well secured to avoid unnecessary damage when the wind starts to whistle
